开启歌特金属乐派大门的龙头乐团─Theatre of Tragedy（悲情剧院）

当1995年来自挪威的Theatre of Tragedy发表了首张同名专辑之后，歌特式金属乐的风潮便开始蔓延至全欧洲，并带动大量歌特金属乐团的追随，在短短几年时间之内，歌特金属乐便得到蓬勃的发展而成为欧洲金属乐界一股新兴的势力！
Theatre of Tragedy的出现，可说为原本刚强制式化的金属音乐，如吉他英雄式的音乐编奏型态，带来了新的冲击与启发，让世人体验到原来金属音乐也能有如此阴柔和着重气氛营造的表现方式，为金属音乐开启了另一种新的可能性！
Theatre of Tragedy或许不是第一个尝试将女音主唱或是将80年代英伦歌特摇滚元素融入于金属乐当中的乐团(如Paradise Lost)，但他们却是确立歌特金属风格与带动歌特金属发展的首要功臣之一！TOT将悠柔的女音演唱、death metal的死腔、歌特摇滚闇中带美的精髓，与沉重的doom metal相互融合，成为了新型态的gothic death metal，TOT的音乐元素，如优美女音主唱与death男腔对唱的形式，大量的键盘弦乐、钢琴运用，都成为日后gothic metal的最基本要素。柔弱女音与残暴死腔的对唱，犹如天使与恶魔般的对比，黑闇兼具优美感的气氛与旋律，都是TOT为歌特金属做出的定义。
已经没有必要再介绍THEATRE OF TRAGEDY 了，她已经不能说得再清楚了："Musique"是THEATRE OF TRAGEDY从一开始就保持唯一独特的音乐精神的诠释。对于这支乐队所做的如此完美的音乐作品让很少有乐队可以永恒称之为“哥特金属/摇滚”乐队。在那些年里，乐队坚持走自己的道路...在1995年，他们的首张同名专辑被认为是哥特金属的一个台阶，THEATRE OF TRAGEDY 迅速的成长起来。
你可能曾经说过THEATRE OF TRAGEDY是一个极端反差的发明家，在众所周知的男性死亡唱腔和被称作纯洁的女人天使般的歌唱之间的一种极端对比。乐队能够创造一种完全的新形式，不要忘了那古老英语，美妙的，浪漫郁闷的歌词的创造者－ Raymond I. Rohonyi。他们成功的变成一支独特的乐队，当然不久就见到了很多仿效者。
乐队的首张专辑里的歌曲"A Hamlet For A Slothful Vassal"成为了教派经典，以至于至今还被认为是最重要的歌曲在每个哥特/独立电影节目中，但是乐队不久就到达了一个新的高度。第二张专辑"Velvet Darkness They Fear" (released in '96) 的推出成为了最成功的哥特专辑之一，并且他们的俱乐部"Tanz der Schatten" 帮助他们吸引到了更多的听众。许多记者跟随着巡演，THEATRE OF TRAGEDY把自己定位于最重要的哥特金属乐团之一。迄今为止，这些挪威人在欧洲成功的卖出了每张专辑超过90000张唱片的销量，他们做了很多事情把很少听金属或者哥特的人也笼络起来。Liv Kristine的声音已经成为了一个商标，并且有许多朋友的帮助下甚至推出了一张个人专辑。
