Woody Guthrie是美国民谣音乐历史上最有影响的人物了，一生写了无数的好歌，死后留下上千首歌词。应该说Woody的女儿找上Wilco和Billy Bragg来为其父亲遗作谱上曲子这个决定虽然不是最好的，起码也坏不到哪去。当然，很多人心中适合的人选是另一个人--Bob dylan。众所周知，Woody是Dylan的精神导师，后者早期其实就是在大量地模仿他--即使Dylan现在已差不多超越了先辈。不过据他透露说--当年在医院里Woody Guthrie曾告诉他自己有几箱没有谱好曲的歌词和诗稿放在家里，他希望Dylan拿去看看。但当他找到Woody Guthrie的家时，恰巧他的妻子不在家，12岁的儿子又不知手稿在哪。于是，一个大腕儿就此错过了和另一真正大腕儿超越时空合作的机会。不过Billy Bragg似乎干得不比Dylan差，当然里面有几首也是Wilco的主脑Jeff Tweedy干的，但普普通通罢了。一个左派，一支热衷实验的民谣乐团--怎么也会偏离原作批判性的诗人色彩，并且那时候Wilco还在探索之中（事实上他们一直都在探索与改变，仿佛民谣界里的Radiohead）。在这张《Mermaid Avenue》（美人鱼大街）之后, Wilco发表了他们的第三张专辑--《Summer Teeth》。04年的《A Ghost Is Born》封套是个鸡蛋，而05年则是碎蛋壳，是不是Wilco已经认为自己破茧成蝶？
好象忘了说说另一个主人公，象个提着音箱和吉他到处乱窜的工人--Billy Bragg。大家都说他是左派，其实左派不过就是高级点的Punk。但起码他迎合了自Woody开始传承的民谣精神，不同于大洋此岸跟他一样流浪的杨一先生（现在是某些高级讲座的常客）那样单纯地歌唱底层与民间（这是民谣-Folk的两个路子），他把矛头伸向政治-与其前辈老Bob接了头--众多英格兰上的码头罢工与反战集会便有他的身影。
似乎脑子里有关大多数美国民谣的概念已成定势：在木吉他叙事与抒情的包裹下指向政治。而民谣的后人们不管在那个地方，都是喝着美国民谣的奶水长大，虽然改头换脸，却还得依旧走在这样的路上，只不过路上的选择多了些。
